Uusimaa

Uusimaa is a province of Finland, located on the coast of the Gulf of Finland. The historical province of Uusimaa covers a larger area, which is divided into the present-day provinces of Uusimaa and (western) Kymenlaakso. Uusimaa is surrounded by Southwest Finland to the west, Kanta-Häme and Päijät-Häme to the north, and Kymenlaakso to the east. The closest neighbor to the south is Estonia, which is separated from Uusimaa by the 60–90 kilometer wide Gulf of Finland. Uusimaa has a land area of ​​9,099.27 km² (3.0% of Finland's land area). The province's freshwater area is 469.58 km² (1.4% of Finland's freshwater area) and a corresponding marine area of ​​6,490.47 km² (12.4% of Finland's marine area). Of the total area excluding marine areas, inland waters account for 5.2%, or about half of the Finnish average. Uusimaa is by far the most populous and densely populated region in Finland: on 31 December 2024, its population was 1,783,165. More than 30 percent of Finns live in Uusimaa. The region's population density is about ten times higher than the Finnish average.
