Mökkirinki was born from a simple idea: renting a holiday cottage should be easy, transparent, and—above all—fair for both owners and renters. Many cottage owners were frustrated by high agency commissions, while renters sought a reliable place to find Finnish holiday destinations without incurring extra costs.
We therefore decided to build a service where publishing a listing is free and owners can manage their properties themselves. Our goal was to create an open, community-driven rental portal that brings together the best cottages in Finland without a burdensome cost structure.
In the early stages, the work was driven largely by passion and a personal interest in the project. However, infrastructure, servers, security, and ongoing development entailed costs that needed to be covered without placing a financial burden on users. We did not want to implement high monthly fees or agency commissions, as doing so would have contradicted our original vision.
We chose an advertising-funded model as the solution. Google ads are integrated into the website, allowing the service to gradually generate revenue as visitor numbers grow. While advertising income is modest at first, it is expected to increase in step with the growth of our user base and online visibility.
Our plan is simple: all initial advertising revenue is used directly to maintain the service. They cover server, hosting, domain, and development costs, while also enabling the creation of new features based on user requests. This allows us to keep Mökkirinki free of charge for both cabin owners and renters.
We believe that long-term growth, user trust, and high-quality content create a sustainable foundation for the service. Our goal is not quick profit, but rather an independent, Finnish, user-centric cabin rental portal that serves its community for years to come.
And so, Mökkirinki continues to grow, one step at a time. Every new cabin listing, every successful booking, and every site visit brings us closer to our goal: a completely free cabin rental service, responsibly funded by advertising revenue, where satisfied users are our most valuable asset.
